Dr. Sarah Wooten

In 16 years of private practice, I have found that there is a cavernous divide between what pet owners think is appropriate health care for their pet, and what veterinarians think.

This communication gap leaves more pets living in pain and suffering from disease that is treatable or preventable, makes everybody miserable,
and erodes the trust between vet teams and pet parents.

As animal health care providers,
we are failing to communicate.

To help pet owners think differently about veterinary care, we need to first understand and respect their perspective, their core values, because here is the deal--
when veterinarians get this right, everything shifts.

When it comes to vet-client communication, I believe
it's time for a new way of thinking, and a new way of life.

Dr. Wooten is co-creator of Vets Against Insanity: The slightly scandalous card game for veterinary professionals.

Practicing veterinary medicine is rewarding, important and often all-consuming. It can also be awkward, annoying and (on most days) downright disgusting. Sometimes, all you can do is laugh about it. Enter the classic question-and-answer party game, Vets Against Insanity: a fun, slightly scandalous take on the work and life of a veterinary professional. (And yes, if you’re seeing similarities to Cards Against Humanity, that's the point.)

Who should play:
  • Veterinary professionals (can be various states of frustrated/happy/slightly drunk/completely sober/tired/overworked)
  • Anyone who recently had to squeeze a dog's anal glands
  • Everyone who recently thought, "I'll have to laugh about this so I don't cry"
  • Anyone who whispers "WTF?!" to themselves multiple times a day.
